We get quite a lot of hummingbirds in our garden, & even more so since we starting hanging a feeder outside the kitchen window. We still get excited when we’re sat at the island & all of a sudden one appears for a drink. I have now taken that one step further by nesting more feeders among hanging baskets. The birds will hopefully be more attracted to the flowers & the food now readily available. Although I’ve had the baskets & feeders for a couple of weeks we didn’t get around to hanging them until today. While I was mixing the nectar & hubby was attaching the brackets a hummingbird flew into the porch area outside our kitchen door…
Hubby popped his head into the kitchen & asked me to take a look at it because he was concerned it couldn’t work out why it couldn’t get out through the skylight. Sadly it quickly appeared to be panicking & didn’t know that flying down instead of up would lead to freedom. I called the boys to come & see it – elder child loves these birds – we all watched both mesmerized & worried. We talked about catching it in a net (which we don’t have) but conscious that we might damage it’s wings. The speed with which it was now moving back & forth under the glass was quite phenomenal, I then had a bright idea…
I sent elder child down to the laundry room to get one of our collapsible mesh laundry hampers. Hubby stood on the top of the ladder & held it open. The bird was still too quick for him but with patience & perseverance he eventually cornered it. After sitting on the top for a few seconds, it then moved towards the opening before falling inside. He then quickly opened the basket up into the out as it happily flew away among cheers of delight from the spectators (both of us, younger child got bored!). Hubby then did a brave little ladder top dance & everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Our good deed for the day & I caught it all on video!!
08.15 – Nearly 20 degrees, how fab is that?
09.30 – Home, drop dog, say hi to my lovely cleaner then back to Costco because we decided over the weekend that we don’t have enough hanging baskets!
11.00 – When I get back in the car I check the receipt because I’m sure they should have charged me more than that. Sure enough I had put a hanging basket in an extra large pot so I could fit it all on the flatbed & they hadn’t zapped the pot – 30 bucks of plant pot free… Result!!
12.00 – It’s a scorcher & I’m planting… planting… planting…
13.30 – Time for a little R&R on a lounger after all my hard work (& my knee is telling me to stop).
14.30 – Guitar practice on the patio – aces!
15.15 – Frantic phone call from elder child – he’s run out of food again & is panicking because he’s hungry & has track & field. I leave early with extra food…
15.30 – Pharmacy pickup & straight to the track.
15.45 – God bless the convertible, I pull up along side a very pink elder child & chuck him a cereal bar!
16.00 – Pick up younger child & bask in the playground for half an hour while we wait for elder child.
17.30 – Dinner on our sunny patio.
19.30 – Boys in bed, BFF arrives, may crafting commence!
08.30 – Yay a sleep in!
10.00 – Hubby & the boys mysteriously disappear off & I request more bags of compost while they are out (Mother’s day next weekend so this is looking quite promising).
12.00 – I’m planting…
12.30 – They return & the boys want to play with the hose pipe – so I regrettably give them the Nerf water guns I had hidden away for the summer – instant hit I am the best mum in the world. However the dog hates me because there is a Nerf war breaking out on her territory & I started it!
13.00 – I’m lifting & moving things that I shouldn’t be (but then I am secretly Wonder Woman!), but it is patio weather & I need to be able to sit out at every opportunity.
14.30 – Urgent shower required as hubby invited his fellow & her family around (Two boys the same age so win win for my boys & grown up time a done deal). They are due at any time & I am filthy.
15.30 – Guests arrive, boys get on instantly but there are not enough Nerf guns – guess what I’ll be buying next week in Costco? The dog is now barking at the new recruits because it has now escalated to world war 3.
17.00 – After I disappear off for an unpleasant date with my physio, wine & painkillers make it all all right when I get back (You do know they work better if you take them with wine?). Now I can join the party properly despite the fact my neck & shoulders are on fire.
18.00 – Gotta love a BBQ & outdoor eating on May 1st.
19.30 – We finally manage to separate all the boys after a fun afternoon suddenly remembering that is still school tomorrow.
20.30 – Finishing the wine because it would be a shame to waste it!
Yes, it’s another awesome day of blue skies & sunshine. So…
We potted, watered, cleaned up, set some backyard ground rules, then potted some more.
Field hockey games are always much more enjoyable when the weather also plays the game – & it was hot out there.
Now my lovely babysitter has arrived (BFF’s daughter) & we are off out for dinner with friends is this is it I’m afraid!
